Reception

Welcome to Reception! 

If you are in RG your teacher is Miss Gostelow and supported by Miss Doyle. If you are in RD your teacher is Miss Durbin and supported by Miss Giammatteo.

We are looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you!

 

Our topic for the Autumn term is called ‘All About Me’.

 

Literacy

We will be reading the following texts- Funny bones, Here We Are, The Colour Monster, Can I build another me? and The Name Jar. We will be exploring these texts through hands on activities such as making a skeleton {Funny bones} and building a robot {Can I build another me?} The children will begin to use their phonic knowledge to write labels and captions. To support their learning at home, you can practice writing their name and write shopping lists.

 

Phonics

We will be starting the Read Write Inc {RWI} phonic scheme. We will introduce a single sound each day and a sheet will be sent home to reinforce each sound. The children will learn how to say and recognise the letter sounds. We will be modelling the correct letter formation. The children will begin to recognise the sounds in their name and initial sounds in words. To continue the learning at home you can play games such as I spy…

 

Religious Education

To begin with, the children will be learning their class prayers and class Saints {RG – St Therese and RD – St David}. We will be working together as a class to create our ‘Golden Rules’. At home, you can practise your class prayers with your family {please see the school website}.

Our topic this half term is ‘Beginnings’. We will be looking at how we are all different and unique and come from diverse families from all over the world. As well as their own immediate families, the children will also learn about being part of the church family which they were welcomed into at Baptism. The children will understand that in the church family, God is Our Father. Additionally, the children will be learning that time spent with God is called Prayer. 


 

Maths- Number

In our Math’s lessons we will be focusing on numbers 1 to 5. We are going to be learning to write our numbers correctly and to recognise the numerals in and out of order. The children will be learning the value of each number in different contexts such as 5 objects and a 5p coin. Additionally, children will be learning to catergorise and sort various objects into groups such as colours {The Colour Monster} and different recyclable materials {Here We Are}. To extend their learning at home, encourage your child to look for numbers in the environment such as door numbers and number plates on cars. 

 

 

‘Wellie Wednesday’

‘Wellie Wednesday’ is our forest school day. This is where we will investigate and learn in the natural environment. The sessions will be topic related for example collecting and using sticks to make skeletons {Funny bones} and painting rock monsters {The Colour Monster}. These sessions provide opportunities for the children to take lead in their learning and manage risks appropriately. 

 

General Reminders

  • To support with reading, please read a story each night with your child. 
  • Keep checking the website and class page for any updates related to Reception.
  • Every Friday is PE. Please ensure your child comes into school in their full PE kit {yellow t-shirt and gree jogging bottoms}.
  • Please clearly label all of your child’s belongings with your child’s name. 
  • Please ensure your child has a named water bottle each day.
  • Please remember to book your child’s lunch a week in advance via ParentPay.
  • ‘Wellie Wednesday’ will run every Wednesday. Please ensure your child brings a water proof jacket, trousers and wellington boots. Please make sure they are clearly named.
