Welcome to the Year 3 class page

Our topics  for the spring term are as follows:

Religious Education – Galilee to Jerusalem

The children will be learning about Jesus’ journey from Galilee to Jerusalem and what this teaches us about his mission and message. We will begin by revisiting the Epiphany, focusing on the visit of the Magi and exploring how this story shows that Jesus came for everyone, not just a few. The children will then learn about some of Jesus’ parables, helping them to understand his teachings about the Kingdom of God and how these messages guide us in how we live and treat others today. Throughout the unit, we will make links to Our Father, thinking carefully about its meaning and how Jesus taught his followers to pray and trust in God.

The second RE topic this term is Desert to Garden, where the children will explore important moments in the Bible that show how God brings hope, growth and new life, even in difficult times. They will reflect on key stories and symbols that help them understand how God’s love can transform challenges into opportunities for renewal. Alongside this learning, there will be a range of Collective Worship opportunities planned by both teachers and the children. This will allow pupils to take an active role in prayer, reflection and worship, helping them to deepen their understanding of faith and develop confidence in sharing their ideas and responses.

English

We started this term with a beautiful picture book, Into The Forest by Anthony Browne. The book gives the children time to explore their creative writing and helps to generate fantastic links to traditional tales. We will move onto an exciting story called Oliver and the Seawigs. There will also be texts linked to our topic and these will be the basis for different types of writing, such as descriptions, diaries and instructions.

Maths

In Maths, we have been concentrating on multiplication and division. We will be looking at related calculations and formal written methods for working out multiplication and division number sentences. We will then explore perimeter and length, looking into units of measure and equivalent lengths. Fractions, mass and capacity and also topics we will cover in maths this term.

Geography

In geography, we will be focusing on place knowledge in the European region of Poland. Our Big Question is ‘Can you compare a region in Poland to a region in the United Kingdom (London and Warsaw)?’ so children will explore this through various fieldwork tasks and with a push towards understanding maps.

We will look into the physical geography of Biomes and Vegetation. This will have a focus on rainforests and the importance of having them. We will locate different rainforests in the world and discover the tribes of people who live in them, as well as the dangers to the rainforests on Earth.

Science

In Science, our topic is Rocks, Fossils and Soils (Chemistry). We will be exploring how rocks can be identified and grouped based on their properties. We will also be comparing and grouping together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties. Our second topic is light (Physics). Through this topic we will be looking into darkness, sunlight and reflection.

Computing

Our first computing topic this term is Emailing, where the children will develop the skills and knowledge to communicate safely and effectively online. Pupils will learn how to log in and out of email, compose and send emails with a subject, correctly include ‘To’ and ‘From’ details, and edit their messages before sending. They will also learn to add attachments and practice using positive, thoughtful language to consider how their words might make the recipient feel. Alongside these practical skills, the unit will cover online safety, including recognising unkind behaviour or cyberbullying, knowing how to report it, offering advice to others, and identifying suspicious or fake emails. In February, it is also Internet Safety Day, where we will explore the importance of internet safety.

Our second computing topic is Journey Inside a Computer, where children will explore how computers work behind the scenes. They will learn to recognise inputs and outputs, understand that a computer sends and receives information, and explain the purpose of different parts of a laptop. Pupils will also be introduced to algorithms, consider what memory is used for, and make comparisons between different types of computers, building on their prior learning about what a computer is.

Expectations

As is the case throughout school, we expect and encourage all children to adhere to high standards of behaviour both in class and in the playground.

The children in Year 3 have negotiated a set of class rules together and have all agreed to follow these with the understanding that doing so will create a happy learning environment that will help their learning.

Working together with parents and guardians plays a large part in ensuring there are good relationships and standards of behaviour in school.

General Reminders

Year 3 will have their class assemblies in Spring 1. Please look out for any communications about these.

Homework Schedule

RE goes on Friday to be returned on Monday.

Reading Comprehension goes on Friday, due on Friday.

Spellings go on Friday, tests are administered on Friday.

Maths / TTRS set out on Friday – checked on Thursday

Reading Records (school library reading scheme books)come home every day and come back to school every day to read in class and with a member of staff/reading volunteer. Children are to do a quiz about the book before they update it in the library. Please sign to show you have read with your child. Reading is important for developing both fluency and reading comprehension. It is recommended you read with your child 15-20 min daily.

  • We really appreciate your support when helping children with homework. The task set is related to what we covered in class that week and provides a chance for them to consolidate their learning.

  • PE takes place every Wednesday Morning. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit in school on this day. All items of uniform must also be named.

  • Please ensure that your child brings in a named bottle of water every day – reminder, no glass bottles permitted.
