    Enrichment at St Michael & St Martin

    Learning beyond the classroom

    At St Michael & St Martin Catholic Primary School, we believe that every child should have opportunities to discover new interests, develop their talents and experience the world beyond the classroom. Our enrichment programme is an important part of our commitment to “Learning together in God’s love”, enabling our pupils to grow academically, spiritually, socially and personally.

    Our carefully planned Enrichment Schedule provides a progressive range of experiences from Early Years to Year 6. These experiences complement our curriculum, broaden pupils’ horizons and provide opportunities for children to develop confidence, independence, resilience, curiosity and a sense of responsibility towards others.

    A broad and ambitious enrichment offer

    Our approach reflects the Department for Education’s Enrichment Framework for Schools and Colleges (2026). The framework identifies five areas that should form part of a broad and well-rounded enrichment offer:

    • Arts and culture

    • Sport and physical activity

    • Civic engagement

    • Nature, outdoors and adventure

    • Wider life and future skills

    Across their time at St Michael & St Martin, pupils experience opportunities within all of these areas.

    Our annual programme includes educational visits, workshops, visitors, performances, sporting opportunities, cultural experiences, outdoor learning and residential experiences. Visits to places such as Kew Gardens, Hampton Court Palace, the Science Museum, the London Transport Museum and the Imperial War Museum enable pupils to deepen their curriculum knowledge through first-hand experiences.

    Opportunities such as Wintershall, theatre and performance experiences, music and the arts support pupils’ cultural and spiritual development, while outdoor and residential opportunities, including Kingswood, help pupils develop independence, teamwork, resilience and confidence.

    Enrichment is not viewed as a collection of isolated activities. Wherever possible, experiences are deliberately connected to what pupils are learning so that they enhance and deepen the curriculum.

    Personal development and wellbeing

    The Ofsted inspection toolkit considers enrichment within Personal Development and Wellbeing. Inspectors consider whether schools provide a coherent programme of personal development through both the curriculum and the wider opportunities and experiences available to pupils.

    At St Michael & St Martin, our enrichment provision supports pupils to:

    • develop their talents and interests;

    • become confident, resilient and increasingly independent;

    • cooperate and communicate effectively with others;

    • experience sport, music, arts and culture;

    • understand the wider world and their place within it;

    • develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally;

    • become responsible, respectful and active citizens;

    • develop healthy and active lifestyles; and

    • acquire knowledge, experiences and wider skills that prepare them for the next stage of their education and later life.

    Enrichment for every child

    We believe enrichment should be an entitlement rather than a privilege.

    We are committed to ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all pupils. We consider participation carefully so that disadvantage, SEND or other barriers do not prevent children from benefiting from the wider experiences available through school.

    Our enrichment provision is therefore planned not simply around the number of opportunities offered, but around who participates, the breadth of their experiences and the difference those experiences make.

    A planned and progressive journey

    Our 2026–27 Enrichment Schedule maps opportunities across the school so that leaders can identify the experiences available to each year group, build progression from Reception to Year 6 and identify any gaps or unnecessary duplication.

    This enables us to continually review and strengthen our provision and reflects the DfE's expectation that high-quality enrichment should be strategically aligned, broad and well-rounded, accessible, outcomes-focused and continually improving.

    Through our curriculum and enrichment programme, we aim to 'open up the world for our pupils' (OFSTED 2023) giving every child rich experiences, lasting memories and opportunities to discover talents and interests that may stay with them throughout their lives.
