Welcome to the Year 2 class page!

It has been a wonderful start to the spring term so far. The children have settled well into their Year 2 routines, displaying great resilience. Below you will find out more about the exciting topics we will be covering this term.

    Religious Education

Our topic for Spring 1 is called ‘Galilee to Jerusalem’, which focusses on introducing children to the life and ministry of Jesus: they explore key events, teachings, parables and miracles from His time in Galilee and His journey towards Jerusalem, reflecting on what His message of love, forgiveness and salvation means for their own lives. In spring 2, our topic is called ‘Desert to Garden’, which centres on the Lenten and Easter story, helping pupils understand the season of Lent, the events of Holy Week, Jesus’ death and resurrection, and the themes of repentance, renewal and hope that lie at the heart of Christian belief. Both branches help deepen children’s understanding of Scripture, the liturgical year and how Jesus’ life shapes Catholic faith and practice.

     English

We will look at the following books: The Journey – Aaron Becker (This is a wordless book), stories by Anthony Browne, Claude in The City, Katie in London and a graphic novel called The Dark. The children will learn about writing for purpose and for a particular audience, whilst thinking about structure and choice of language. Children will regularly take part in Big Writing sessions, where they are able to independently use their knowledge to write their own stories, postcards and instructions.

Reading books will need to be changed regularly. It is important that you read with your child daily. This should be recorded in Reading record books. These are checked three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It is a good way to communicate any concerns or queries regarding your child’s reading.

    Maths

In Maths, we will be starting the term learning all about money, progressing from their knowledge of this from year 1. We will then move onto Multiplication and Division. We will then continue to apply the four operations and solve simple word problems. Following on from this, we will begin to explore length and height, as well as mass, capacity and temperature. These are all important when learning different ways of measuring in real life.

    Science

In science, we will be learning all about plants (light and dark). We will be exploring the different parts of plants and trees. We will explore what happens to plants in different light conditions.

We will also be learning about living things and their habitats. We will explore different habitats for animals, plants and living things. We will look into habitats in our local area, as well as explore food chains.

    Geography

Our topic this term is locational knowledge of the United Kingdom. We will be identifying physical and human features to create individual maps of London. We will look at the capital cities and key landmarks with the main focus on London.

    History

Our topic this term is about significant historical events, people and places in their own locality, which is all about the Tudors. We will learn about Henry VIII, Tudor culture, Tudor houses and find out more about Hampton Court Palace. Our big question for this topic is “What was life like in the Tudor period?”

     Assemblies

Look out for Year 2’s Assemblies, which the children are thoroughly looking forward to performing at the start of the Spring term.

    Expectations

As is the case throughout school, we expect and encourage all children to adhere to the high standards of behaviour both in class and in the playground.

The children in Year 2 have worked together to create a set of Golden Rules and have all agreed to follow these rules with the understanding that doing so will create a happy learning environment that will help their learning.

Working together with parents and guardians plays a big part in establishing good relationships and standards of behaviour.
