Welcome back to school, Year 3, for the summer term! We hope that you are rested and ready.

We have fantastic topics and lessons planned for you all to keep you engaged and excited about your learning journey.

Religious Education: To the Ends of the Earth

In R.E., we are learning about the meaning of the period between Easter and Pentecost. By the end of the topic, children will have a better understanding of how the Mass we have today has been influenced by scripture. The children will develop their understanding of how the Holy Spirit is with us today and guide us to have a closer connection with God.

In Summer 2, our focus will be on the ‘Kingdom of God’. During this term we will explore the Kingdom as described in the Bible, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. We will then get the chance to discover where we can see the Kingdom of God in action in our own lives, in our local community of Hounslow and the wider world. 

During Summer 2, we will also place emphasis on exploring other faiths. We will have an assigned week to explore one of the five other main faiths around the world today: Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism, Buddhism or Judaism – this will be our school’s ‘Inter-Faith Week.’

English: 

Our texts this term are linked to our history topic on Roman civilisation. We will be reading ‘The Romans, Gods, Emperors and Dormice’ by Marcia Williams. We will learn about the founding of the city of Rome, read the myth of Romulus and Remus and write our own version of this ancient tale. We will explore the Roman way of life before transforming into Romans ourselves during our Roman day in school. 

Another wonderful text this term is ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit. During these lessons, we will learn about the terrible events that took place during this time and write a newspaper report, imagining that we were there. We will explore the rich vocabulary within both books before using it in our own writing. 

Mathematics: 

In Maths, we are continuing to become more secure using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.) We will be working on:  

Fractions: Tenths, Tenths as decimals, ordering, adding/subtracting and equivalent    fractions. 

Measurements: Months/years, Telling the time to the minute, 12-hour clock, 24-hour  clock, duration and problem-solving, compare/measure/add and subtract mass,  compare/measure/ add and subtract capacity,  

Geometry: Movement and position, angles, properties of shapes, horizontal, vertical,  parallel & perpendicular lines, 2D shapes and 3D shapes 

Times tables to practise (3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10) 

Solve mathematical word problems involving all areas 

History: - The Romans 

Big Question: How have the Romans had an impact on life today? 

We will be studying the Romans and discovering how they fit into the timeline of history. We will find out how far their empire spread and why they invaded Britain. We will get a chance to explore some of their amazing inventions, such as the Roman baths, aqueducts and central heating! 

We will learn about their creation myths, gods and goddesses and the impact Roman life had on Celtic Britain and how their time here still impacts us today. 

As well as this, we are going to enjoy a Roman-themed day at school, during which we will taste Roman food, listen to stories and re-enact famous battles using shields which we will have designed in school. 

Art and D.T 

During Summer 1 we will focus on Electrical Systems, researching how they operate before applying this knowledge to design our own electrical system. We will then have the opportunity to make a prototype before presenting our findings to members of the Leadership Team in a Dragons' Den-style presentation. In Summer 2 we will place emphasis on Crafting and Designing: Ancient Egyptian Scrolls, which will help embed our knowledge on our previous history topic – Ancient Egypt. During these sessions we will explore Ancient Egyptian art, design our own scrolls, and attempt to make paper using the same processes the Ancient Egyptians used before making zines. 

Throughout Summer 2, we will focus on Vamona Navelcar, who was an artist from Goa, India, who has studied and worked in Portugal, Mozambique, and Goa.

Science – Plants 

In Summer Term 1, our Science topics will be Light, Forces and Magnets.

In Summer 2, we will place all emphasis on plants. During these sessions we will develop our understanding of roots, leaves and stems and the vital role they all play in the growth and prosperity of a plant. We will get the chance to visit the school garden and compare other plants / plant types to each other, discussing why and how plants have adapted to their environment. 

The children will enhance their understanding and explore the importance of nutrients for adequate plant growth. During this term, they will get the chance to plant their own seeds and place them all in different conditions before observing and evaluating the most positive and effective environment for growth. 

Expectations 

As is the case throughout school, we expect and encourage all children to demonstrate high standards of behaviour both in class and in the playground, in order to create a safe, respectful and happy learning environment.  The children in Year 3 have negotiated a set of class rules together and have all agreed to follow these, as they understand that this will help their learning. 

Working together with parents and guardians plays a large part in ensuring there are good relationships and standards of behaviour in school.  

General Reminders 

We really appreciate your support when helping children with homework. 

• Any tasks set are related to work covered in class that week or work the children will be exploring in the coming weeks – this is to provide a chance for them to reinforce their learning or have prior knowledge to assist with their learning in class.

• Spellings are set weekly and tested every Friday.

• Times tables need to be practised at home, which will help them during maths lessons. Now that we are in the Summer Term of Year 3, focus on Times Tables now will assist with the knowledge of the Year 4 Times Tables Test.
