Welcome to Year 4’s Class Page!

The teachers in Year 4 are:
Miss Montenero (4M) and Mr McElearney (4Mc)

We hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and is feeling refreshed for the term ahead!

    RE

In RE we are covering “From Galilee to Jerusalem.” We will be studying Jesus’ miracles and explaining what these tell us about God’s kingdom.

    English

In English, we are reading Arthur and the Golden Rope, delving into a mythical Viking world. We will be following the adventures of an unassuming young boy who holds the fate of his village in his hands. This book (as well as our guided reading texts for the half-term), run parallel with our current History topic ‘Vikings’ in order to fully immerse the children in the topic. Continuing the genre of myths and legends, we will be exploring the diverse world of myths and legends of the Sea and focusing on features of non-fiction texts. This will provide the children with opportunities to develop their drama, speaking and listening and creative writing skills.

The children will be looking at using their reading skills to predict and infer key information from the text whilst also creating their own versions and outcomes of events from the story.

Handwriting – Pupils will be following the Penpals Handwriting programme and focusing on joining letters in all written work.

Comprehension – Pupils will be completing multiple comprehension tasks in order to improve their understanding and inference of texts.

Editing and evaluating work – After ‘Big Writes’ pupils are now beginning to use a green pen to check and edit their work to improve accuracy and spelling. This also re-enforces children to edit their work prior to its completion.

Guided Reading Reading skills will be explicitly taught to the children as well as developing inference of a carefully chosen text.

Spellings – This term we would like the children to not only learn their spellings but also produce sentences that incorporate the word. This will promote their understanding of words and boost their vocabulary levels.

    Maths

This term, we will be focusing on topics including Fractions, Length, Perimeter, and also, consolidating children’s knowledge in Division and Multiplication. Towards the end of this term, we will begin to look at decimal places which we will then pick up and consolidate in the summer term.

We will be doing weekly timed arithmetic and timetables tests to improve upon existing knowledge and to prepare children for the times tables test that is a statutory requirement at the end of year 4.

    Science

In science this term we will be exploring “Sound”. The children will identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating. They will recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear and find patterns between pitch and volume of a sound and features of the object that produced it. They will be using results to draw simple conclusions, make predictions for new values, suggest improvements and raise further questions. Finally, they will be using straightforward scientific evidence to answer questions or to support their findings.

    History and Geography

    Vikings

In this topic we will be exploring the:

    •        Viking raids and invasion

    •        Resistance by Alfred the Great and Athelstan, first king of England

    •        Compare the Christian and Pagan traditions during Alfred the Great’s era

    •        Further Viking invasions and Danegeld

During the topic, we will be forming our answers to the Big Question – What happened during the Viking raid at Lindisfarne?

    Migration

After half-term, children will be looking at the geography topic of Migration. This topic will allow them to understand why people migrate from one country to another and also look at the Windrush.

    Expectations

We encourage all children to demonstrate a high standard of behaviour at all times in order to create a safe, respectful and happy learning environment.

Children should also be returning their homework on time. If homework can not be submitted, please send your child with a letter explaining why.

Each class has participated in the process of making a set of ‘Golden Rules.’ The children have agreed to follow the rules as they understand that this will help their learning.

Respecting each other and all members of staff is expected and reflects the ethos of our school.

The children are required to listen carefully and to develop their self-control and concentration in class and in the playground.

Working together with parents and guardians plays a big part in establishing good relationships and standards of behaviour.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to the term ahead!
