At St Michael and St. Martin, we want your child's first experience of school to be happy and exciting and where they discover and learn through play in a stimulating environment.

To enable young children to make good progress in their learning, we build upon the skills they have when they join school. The children have opportunities to develop emotional security, self-belief and social skills. Our aim is to assist all children in developing a love of learning and an excitement about coming to school each day.

The Early Years Foundation Stage overview:
 

In Nursery, we support children in three prime areas:

  •  Personal, social and emotional development
  • Physical development

  • Communication and language

 
These three prime areas are strengthened and applied through the following specific areas:
 

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the world

  • Expressive arts and design

Each prime and specific area is further divided into related aspects.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development


Personal, social and emotional development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

PSED is made up of these aspects:

Self-confidence and self-awareness

Managing feelings and behaviour

Making relationships

Physical Development

Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive, and to develop their coordination, control, and movement. There is a focus on fine and gross motor skill development from birth and how these are linked to other aspects of learning. Children are helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

PD is made up of these aspects:

Communication & Language Development

Communication and Language development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

CL is made up of these aspects:

Listening and attention

Understanding

Speaking

Literacy Development

Literacy development involves encouraging children to recognise sounds all around them and developing the skills that support early reading and writing. Children need access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other texts) and to experience signs, labels and information in their environment.

LD is made up of these aspects:

Reading

Writing

Mathematics


Mathematics introduces children to number and shape through rhyme, counting, sorting, using numbers in play and to begin to recognise and describe shapes all around them. They will explore size and shape through investigations using water, sand and resources linked to their topics.

MD is made up of these aspects:

Shapes, space and measures

Understanding the World


Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

UW is made up of these aspects:

People and communities

The World

Technology


Expressive arts and design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play and design and technology.

EAD is made up of these aspects:

Exploring and using media and materials

Being imaginative 

Religious Education

Our topic this half-term is called, ‘In the Beginning.’ We will learn about our class Saint (St. Anthony) and classroom rules. We will learn how to make the sign of the cross and learn our morning & afternoon prayers.  

The children will learn about themselves, their families and their new school. 

We will be looking at how we are all different and unique and come from diverse families in our communities and from all over the world. As well as their own immediate families, the children will also learn about being part of the church family which they were welcomed into at Baptism. The children will understand that in the church family, God is our Father. Additionally, the children will be learning that time spent with God is called Prayer.

General Reminders 
  • Children need to bring a water bottle from home. 

  • Don't forget to label your child’s coats, jumpers, T-shirts, jogging bottoms, shoes and water bottles.

  • Please make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast in the morning so they are ready for the day.

  • Children will have a healthy snack at school (we will provide it)

  • Please order your child’s milk https://www.coolmilk.com 

  • Please arrive on time and collect your child on time.

  • Each week your child will bring a book home (you can choose it with your child from our outdoor library). 

  • Book bags every day (You can buy book bags from us or the office for £6) 

  • We will be using Tapestry  https://tapestryjournal.com

Tapestry is a secure online Learning Journal to record photos, observations and comments, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, to build up a record of your child's experiences during their time with us.
