A World of Languages
Celebration of Belgian life and culture
The end of March saw a hive of activities around the theme of Belgian life and culture at school. We have been very lucky to have a Belgian assistant, Thorgal Dufrasnes, working with us alongside our French teacher, Madame Encer since January, so we took this opportunity to learn about Belgian life and culture.
Thorgal organised a series of activities for the children during March, culminating in a colourful assembly on 28 March. The children and the teachers wore clothes in the colours of the Belgian flag (red, yellow and black) - thank you parents for organising this!
During the Assembly, each of the Year groups shared their learning with everyone. A big ‘Bravo’ to all the boys and girls who stood up in front of the whole school and presented at Assembly. Our Year 1 pupils showed us how to count up to ten in French, whilst the Year 2s made Belgian flags and taught us the names of some Belgian specialities such as ‘Moules et frites’ (mussels and fries) and ‘les gaufres’ (waffles). Our Year 3 group showed us their amazing cartoons and shared one of their adventure stories. Year 4 pupils introduced us to Justine Henin, a famous Belgian tennis champion and Herman van Rumpoy, president of the European Council. The Year 5s, who had been learning about the geography of Belgium, made two short presentation about the various regions and languages spoken (French, Dutch and German) and Ypres, a small town which saw some of the fiercest fighting during The First World War. Our Year 6s looked at the History of Belgium from pre-historic times up until the Second World War. We enjoyed two very informative presentations, one about the Belgian experience of the First World War and another about the Roman occupation of Belgium under Julius Caesar.
Before January, we knew very little about Belgium, but today, thanks to everything that Thorgal has taught us we can’t wait to visit it one day (and perhaps practice our French at the same time!).
